The Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) has shared a video on social media showing what real love looks like — in the form of two trumpeter swans reuniting after being apart for days.

The pair was separated after Ann, one of TWC’s volunteers, spotted one of the birds with what appeared to be blood on its feathers.

The rescue team was able to safely capture the bird on April 1 and once he was in their care, they realized the bird’s injuries weren’t serious.

The blood was coming from a small cut on his beak that was thoroughly cleaned and treated, TWC explained on Facebook, though the blood had affected the waterproofing of his feathers so he needed a few days with the centre’s rehabilitation team.

They also noted that the swan had previously been admitted in December, requiring urgent care after his “beak and tongue had become bound by fishing line.”

“It was like a magical romance moment from the movies,” said TWC Volunteer Ann, recounting when these trumpeter swan mates reunited after days of being apart. “It was so beautiful, I’ve never seen anything like that in the last 12 years!” On Monday at Bluffer’s park, Ann became concerned when she spotted one of the swans with blood on his feathers. As a long-time volunteer, she knew he needed immediate help and contacted TWC’s Rescue Team. At the shore’s edge, team member Sarrah spotted the swan out on the water, with his head tucked beneath his wing. Eventually, he swam towards a shallow bay area, where Sarrah skillfully lured the wounded animal close enough to catch him with a net and rush him to TWC. Although the blood appeared concerning, the source was only a small cut on his beak that was thoroughly cleaned and treated. This same swan had been admitted before back in December, needing urgent care after his beak and tongue had become bound by fishing line. The blood had affected the waterproofing of the patient’s feathers. But after a few days of supportive care from the Rehabilitation Team - who ensured he was preening properly so his waterproofing could be restored - he was ready for release! Back at Bluffer’s park, Ann and friends of TWC, Art and Shona (who recorded the special moment), prepared to release the bird. As Shona opened the kennel door to let him out, they all witnessed this remarkable and truly touching display. 💚

By April 4, TWC staffers brought him back to Bluffer’s Park in Scarborough where arguably the most beautiful, picturesque reunion ever to happen there took place.

“It was like a magical romance moment from the movies,” Ann said. “It was so beautiful, I’ve never seen anything like that in the last 12 years!”

Find us someone that runs towards us like that. Swoon.

TWC executive director Nathalie Karvonen explained to the Toronto Sun that swans mate for life and the “sensitive beings” can react almost like humans.

But how did his mate know if or when he was ever coming back?

“Only the swans know what goes through their heads,” Karvonen said, “but I imagine his mate would wait quite a while for him to return.”
