With a new MLB season underway, it's time for an updated rundown of how all 30 MLB farm systems stack up after an offseason of trades and a wave of graduations to the big leagues.

The following factors helped determine the placement of players and teams:

    • Potential (Player):Potential trumps production a lot of the time, especially in the lower levels of the minors and with recent draft picks. Skill sets and tools are often better indicators of what kind of player someone will be.
    • Talent (Player):As for those in the higher levels of the minors who are close to breaking through to the big leagues, production and talent were the determining factors, as these players are viewed as more complete products.
    • Overall Depth (Team):Having one or two elite prospects is great, but a deep farm system is the way to build a sustainable contender. Depth and talent were the biggest factors in ranking each team.
    • High-End Talent (Team):There is a difference between a prospect who has a chance of making an impact in the majors and a prospect who could be a star. Elite prospects served as a tiebreaker when teams were close in the rankings.

A tier system was used to help differentiate the varying levels of individual talent:

    • Tier 1:Prospects who have elite skill sets and All-Star potential. This is the cream of the prospect crop. These players make up B/R's Top 100 prospect list, which will publish later this week.
    • Tier 2:Prospects who have a good chance of becoming impact contributors. These are the players who were in consideration for spots onB/R's Top 100 prospect list and could end up there in the future.
    • Tier 3:Prospects who profile as fringe MLB contributors or young players who are still too raw to project any higher. This tier represents the bulk of prospects around baseball, though more than a few could climb to the next tier.

A player must not have passed the rookie-eligibility limits (130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, 45 days on an active roster prior to September roster expansion) to be included in these rankings.

Note: Evan Carter technically still holds prospect eligibility, but he will reach 45 days on the active roster later this week, so he was excluded from the Texas Rangers list in anticipation of surpassing that limit.

    10. RHP Walbert Urena (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: RHP Barrett Kent

The Angels signed Kent to a $1 million bonus as an eighth-round pick in the 2023 draft, and he tossed 8.2 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts in his pro debut. The 6'4", 215-pound right-hander has a four-pitch repertoire headlined by a mid-90s fastball with good life, and his stuff could tick up across the board as he adds more strength.

    9. OF Andres Valor (Tier 3)
    10. IF Yiddi Cappe (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: OF Luis Cova

The Marlins signed Cova for $1.4 million as the headliner of their 2024 international class, which was the largest bonus they gave to an international player in three years. With a 55-hit, 50-power, 60-speed profile he has 20/20 potential offensively and should stick in center field where he makes the most of his plus speed.

    8. RHP Chandler Champlain (Tier 3)
    9. OF Tyler Gentry (Tier 3)
    10. OF Gavin Cross (Tier 3)

The 2023 Minor League Pitcher of the Year for the Royals, Barnett posted a 3.30 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 137 strikeouts in 114.2 innings between High-A and Double-A. The 23-year-old has a polished four-pitch arsenal, and if he can take a step forward with his command, he could make a push for a spot in the MLB rotation next year.

    9. OF Kenedy Corona (Tier 3)
    10. LHP Colton Gordon (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: OF Jacob Melton

With Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford traded to the New York Mets in the Justin Verlander deal last summer, Melton is now the clear top prospect in the Houston organization. The 23-year-old posted an .801 OPS with 17 doubles, 23 home runs, 55 RBI and 46 steals in 99 games between High-A and Double-A last year, and he could be the future in center field.

The top pitching prospect in the 2023 international class, Morales signed for $3 million and then posted a 2.86 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 53 strikeouts in 44 innings while limiting opposing hitters to a .202 average. Already 21 years old, he could be pushed aggressively through the system.

    9. OF Jaison Chourio (Tier 3)
    10. LHP Joey Cantillo (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: OF Chase DeLauter

With a 6'4", 235-pound frame, DeLauter looks the part of a middle-of-the-order slugger, and after dealing with a nagging foot injury early in his career he made up for lost time in the Arizona Fall League last year where he hit .299/.385/.529 with five doubles, five home runs and 27 RBI in 23 games. The 22-year-old could see the majors before 2024 is over.

24. Atlanta Braves

    9. RHP Cade Kuehler (Tier 3)
    10. 1B/3B David McCabe (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: SS Jose Perdomo

The Braves inked Perdomo to the largest bonus of any player in the 2024 international class, giving him $5 million of their $5.284 million bonus pool. A polished offensive player with a 55-grade hit tool, he also runs well and should be able to stick at shortstop long-term with good range and a strong arm.

    9. OF Enmanuel Bonilla (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Chad Dallas (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: LHP Ricky Tiedemann

Tiedemann has just 122.2 professional innings under his belt, so ramping up his workload and proving he can handle a full season's worth of innings will be the next step in his development. The 21-year-old got some additional work in the Arizona Fall League last year where he won Pitcher of the Year honors with a 2.50 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 18 innings.

    9. SS Cristofer Torin (Tier 3)
    10. 3B Ruben Santana (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: LHP Yu-Min Lin

Lin does not have overpowering stuff with a fastball that sits in the low 90s, but he keeps hitters off-balance extremely well with a five-pitch repertoire, and he racked up an organization-high 140 strikeouts in 121.1 innings between High-A and Double-A last year. The 20-year-old has an undersized 5'11", 160-pound frame, but he has shown the necessary durability to profile as a middle-of-the-rotation starter.

    9. RHP Emiliano Teodo (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Jose Corniell (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: 1B Abimelec Ortiz

With middling athleticism and a bottom-of-the-scale defensive profile, Ortiz will go as far as his bat carries him, but it's getting harder and harder to ignore his offensive production. The 22-year-old hit .294/.371/.619 with 33 home runs and 101 RBI in 109 games between Single-A and High-A last year, then posted a 1.060 OPS with three long balls in 12 games in the Arizona Fall League. He is off to a hot start once again in his first Double-A action.

The No. 20 overall pick in the 2020 draft and a consensus Top 100 prospect when he made his MLB debut in 2022, Cavalli suffered a UCL sprain that he initially tried to rehab before undergoing Tommy John surgery last spring. Now 25 years old, he is on the rehab trail after working off the mound during spring training, and he could return to the majors at some point in 2024.

    9. OF Grant McCray (Tier 3)
    10. LHP Joe Whitman (Tier 3)

Birdsong has seen his fastball velocity tick up from the low 90s at Eastern Illinois University to bumping 98 mph last season. His curveball has also taken a step forward and is a clear plus pitch, while he also works in a slider and a changeup. The 22-year-old had a 3.31 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 149 strikeouts in 100.2 innings over three minor league levels in 2023.

    9. RHP Richard Fitts (Tier 3)
    10. SS Nazzan Zanetello (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: RHP Wikelman Gonzalez

The Red Sox have had a bit more success of late developing pitching talent, with guys like Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford and Tanner Houck finding success in the MLB rotation. That bodes well for the continued progression of Gonzalez, who had a 3.96 ERA with 168 strikeouts in 111.1 innings last year while limiting opposing hitters to a .190 average. He needs to cut down his walk rate to be an effective starter, but his stuff is elite and he has a high floor as a potential late-inning reliever.

    10. RHP Gordon Graceffo (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: IF Thomas Saggese

The Cardinals acquired Saggese and Tekoah Roby in the deal that sent Jordan Montgomery to the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline, and both have impact potential. Saggese, 22, has a limited defensive profile and average athleticism, but he could be an offensive-minded second baseman after hitting .306/.374/.530 with 34 doubles, 26 home runs and 111 RBI in 139 games in the upper minors last year.

    8. C Eduardo Tait (Tier 3)
    9. SS William Bergolla (Tier 3)
    10. SS Devin Saltiban (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: SS Starlyn Caba

Caba has the highest ceiling among a handful of intriguing young middle infielders in the lower levels of the Philadelphia system. The 18-year-old signed for $3 million as part of the 2023 international class, and his 55-hit, 60-speed profile was on full display in his pro debut last year. He hit .301/.423/.346 with 40 hits and 16 steals in 38 games in the Dominican Summer League, and a hot start this year could vault him onto Top 100 lists.

The Twins acquired Gonzalez in the deal that sent Jorge Polanco to the Seattle Mariners near the end of spring training, and he was one of the most productive teenagers in the minors last year. He hit .298/.361/.476 with 23 doubles, 18 home runs, 84 RBI and 10 steals in 116 games between Single-A and High-A, and he didn't turn 20 years old until Jan. 4. A future outfield of Gonzalez, Walker Jenkins and Emmanuel Rodriguez should have Twins fans excited.

The Rays have made a habit of targeting teenagers in other team's farm systems and acquiring them right before they take off, with Curtis Mead (via PHI) and Junior Caminero (via CLE) two notable examples. Suarez could be the next success story after coming over from the Miami Marlins last offseason in exchange for JT Chargois and Xavier Edwards. The 19-year-old had a 1.52 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 59.1 innings between rookie ball and Single-A in 2023.

With a 50-hit, 65-power profile, Montes has as much offensive upside as any teenager in the sport, and with a strong 6'3", 210-pound frame and a smooth left-handed stroke he has drawn comparisons to Yordan Alvarez. The 19-year-old hit .303/.440/.560 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI in 70 games last season, and more of the same against tougher competition will send his prospect stock soaring.

With a 2.57 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 107 strikeouts in 87.2 innings last season, Christian Scott emerged as the top pitching prospect in a Mets system that has skewed heavily toward the position-player side of things in recent years. The 24-year-old walked just 12 hitters and has some of the best command among pitching prospects, but he still needs to prove he can eat up innings as last year's total was a career-high.

Madden has been a bit overshadowed in a Detroit system that has done a nice job churning out MLB arms in recent years, but the upside that made him one of the top college pitchers in the 2021 draft is still there. The 24-year-old had a 3.43 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 146 strikeouts in 118 innings at Double-A last year, and he could debut in 2024.

A year after signing Ethan Salas, the Padres again walked away with the consensus top prospect in the 2024 international class, signing De Vries to a $4.2 million bonus. The 17-year-old is a true five-tool talent, and his advanced pitch recognition skills, plus speed and high baseball IQ could help him follow a similarly quick path to Salas through the minors. Expect to see him on Top 100 prospect lists by midseason.

    9. C Alfredo Duno (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Ty Floyd (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: 3B Sal Stewart

The Reds system has churned out young offensive talent the past few years, and Stewart could be the next to emerge as an elite-level prospect. The No. 32 overall pick in the 2022 draft has a 55-hit, 50-power profile, and he batted .275/.396/.416 with 24 doubles, 12 home runs and 71 RBI in 117 games between Single-A and High-A as a 19-year-old. His exit velocity numbers suggest there is more over-the-fence power to come.

    8. OF Zac Veen (Tier 3)
    9. C Drew Romo (Tier 3)
    10. OF Benny Montgomery (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: C/IF/OF Cole Carrigg

I'm admittedly higher on Carrigg than most prospect evaluators, but it's hard not to be intrigued by his rare versatility. The 2023 second-round pick started games at catcher, shortstop and center field after signing last year, and he hit .350/.406/.600 in 140 plate appearances while he did it.

    9. OF Brando Mayea (Tier 3)
    10. C/1B Ben Rice (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: LHP Henry Lalane

With a towering 6'7", 211-pound frame and three quality pitches, Lalane posted a brilliant 34-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 21.2 innings in the Florida Complex League last year after spending the first two years of his pro career in the Dominican Summer League. The 19-year-old will be brought along slowly, but he has top-of-the-rotation potential.

    9. LHP Jackson Ferris (Tier 2)
    10. LHP Maddux Bruns (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: LHP Maddux Bruns

A surprise selection at No. 29 overall in the 2021 draft, Bruns showcased elite raw stuff in high school, but rarely backed it with consistent command. The 21-year-old tops out at 98 mph with his fastball, and his slider and curveball both flash plus. He had a 3.99 ERA with 126 strikeouts in 97 innings last season while trimming his walk rate from 9.1 to 6.2 per nine innings. He still has a ways to go, but things are moving in the right direction.

On Tuesday, the Dodgers called up Pagés to the big league roster.

    9. SS Mitch Jebb (Tier 3)
    10. OF Jase Bowen (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: RHP Bubba Chandler

A standout two-way player in high school who was also a 4-star quarterback recruit committed to play both sports at Clemson, Chandler has now turned his full attention to pitching and his stock is on the rise. The 6'2", 200-pound right-hander went 10-4 with a 4.54 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 111 innings last year, and he is still just scratching the surface of his potential.

    8. OF Luis Lara (Tier 3)
    9. RHP Josh Knoth (Tier 3)
    10. SS Cooper Pratt (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: RHP Josh Knoth

Knoth had the best curveball in the 2023 draft class by a wide margin, and he backs his elite breaking ball with a mid-90s fastball and good slider and a developing changeup. His 6'1", 190-pound frame does not offer much in the way of remaining physical projection, but his present stuff is good enough to believe he can develop into a top-tier prospect.

    9. SS Jacob Gonzalez (Tier 3)
    10. LHP Jake Eder (Tier 3)

These are the three prospects the White Sox acquired in the Dylan Cease trade, and all three slot immediately into the organizational Top 10 list, helping to vault them up these rankings heading into the 2024 season. Thorpe and Iriarte were both sent to Double-A to open the year, but they could debut at some point in the second half, while Zavala is still only 19 years old and already playing at High-A.

    9. RHP Chayce McDermott (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Seth Johnson (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: LHP Cade Povich

Povich enters the 2024 season as the top pitching prospect in an Orioles system loaded with hitters. The 23-year-old racked up 171 strikeouts in 126.2 innings between Double-A and Triple-A last year, though he also walked 66 batters and posted a 5.04 ERA. He is still capable of another step forward if he cleans up his mechanics and improves his command.

    9. SS Jefferson Rojas (Tier 3)
    10. OF Alexander Canario (Tier 3)

    Prospect Snapshot: IF James Triantos

It remains to be seen where Triantos fits defensively, as he didn't look great at third base and is firmly blocked at second base by Nico ho*rner, but his bat is going to be knocking on the MLB door in no time. The 21-year-old hit .417/.495/.679 with 11 extra-base hits and nine steals in 22 games in the Arizona Fall League, and he is off to a scorching start at Double-A.
